Category: Business English | Sustainability

🌍 Have you ever wondered if your shopping habits could help heal the planet?

🛒 Can businesses make money and protect the environment?

♻️ What if your shoes, phone case, or coffee cup could disappear without a trace?

In today’s world, the climate crisis, plastic pollution, and overflowing landfills are pushing us to rethink how we live—and how we shop.

But it’s not just governments and activists sounding the alarm.

More and more businesses are stepping up, offering sustainable products and services that reduce waste and rethink consumption.

Welcome to the world of eco-business—where profits don’t have to come at the planet’s expense.

📖 Eco-Business in Action

An eco-business is a company that works to help the environment while still making a profit. These businesses try to reduce waste, avoid harmful materials, and create products that don’t hurt the Earth. The goal? To meet people’s needs today without destroying the planet for future generations.

Green business isn’t just about charity—it’s smart economics. As more consumers demand eco-friendly choices, companies that offer sustainable products are winning both customer loyalty and market share.

🌿 Real Business Examples

PELA is a company that began by making compostable phone cases from plant-based materials. The success of the idea led them to create other products like AirPod cases and sunglasses. Their goal is simple: to make everyday items without plastic or pollution.

Piñatex is an innovation born from a question: Can we make sustainable leather? Dr. Carmen Hijosa saw how damaging traditional leather production was and created a new material from pineapple leaf by-products. It’s now used in fashion, furniture, and accessories—providing jobs to farmers and reducing waste.

Native Shoes makes fully compostable footwear and reuses old shoes as playground flooring. Their mission is to build a shoe that won’t end up in a landfill. With every new design, they keep their eyes on the environment.

Lush Cosmetics offers “naked” products—soaps and shampoos without packaging. Their containers are made from recycled plastic, and customers can return them for a discount. Their ethics include cruelty-free testing and fair trade ingredients.

Allbirds is a New Zealand-based shoe company using materials like merino wool and sugarcane to create stylish, low-carbon footwear. Their packaging is 90% recycled cardboard, and they publish their carbon footprint on every product.

Ecovative Design produces biodegradable packaging made from mycelium (the root structure of mushrooms). This material is grown in just a few days and used as a compostable alternative to Styrofoam.

Loop is a global platform that partners with brands like Nestlé and Unilever to deliver goods in reusable containers. After use, customers return them to be cleaned and reused—just like the milkman system of the past.

Too Good To Go is a mobile app that helps restaurants and grocery stores sell unsold food at reduced prices. This prevents food waste while offering customers a good deal.

Bite Toothpaste Bits offers a plastic-free alternative to toothpaste in chewable tablet form. Packaged in glass jars, this product eliminates the need for plastic tubes altogether.
