Why Online English Teaching is a Calling, Not a Cop-Out

Have you ever encountered these sentiments?

“Oh, you’re just a teacher?”
“Online? So… like, Zoom classes?”
Cue the glazed look. The faint smirk. The silent downgrade in status.

If you’re an online English teacher, you’ve probably felt it—that subtle dismissal. The assumption that your job is somehow easy, second-rate, or temporary. As if you’ve stepped off the real career path and into some lazy digital loophole that doesn’t require much effort, intellect, or heart.

Let’s set the record straight. Online teaching—especially teaching English as a foreign language (EFL or ESL)—is not a shortcut or a fallback. It is a demanding, deeply human, emotionally charged profession that only a special kind of person can do well. And it's time we started treating it that way.

🌍 Not Everyone Can Do This — And That’s a Fact

The internet has opened classrooms across borders, but don’t be fooled: not everyone who speaks English can teach it, and not every teacher can thrive online.

To teach English online effectively, you need to be a:

  • Tech genius – able to juggle Zoom, slides, breakout rooms, and whiteboards while solving audio problems on the fly.

  • Coach and therapist – offering support to students with anxiety, burnout, self-doubt, or culture shock.

  • Time strategist – maximizing 25- to 60-minute sessions while giving personalized feedback, building rapport, and following a curriculum.

  • Actor and entertainer – keeping attention high in pixelated rooms where silence is louder and distractions are one click away.

  • Cultural ambassador – decoding idioms, business norms, and pronunciation quirks for learners in Russia, Brazil, Korea, or Saudi Arabia—sometimes all in one day.

You’re not just explaining grammar. You’re managing energy, attention, emotion, and expectation—across time zones, cultures, and bandwidth.

🎯 The Myth of the “Easy Job”

So why does this job get underestimated?

Because it looks easy from the outside.

When you see someone smiling through a screen, chatting with students in pajamas from a sunlit home office, it looks like a side gig. It looks like freedom.

What you don’t see is:

  • The late nights planning custom lessons

  • The emotional labor of encouraging shy or frustrated learners

  • The sheer stamina it takes to teach 5–8 back-to-back classes with no commute, but no break either

  • The patience it takes to repeat “present perfect” for the 14th time this week without losing heart

  • The heartbreak when your most motivated student cancels for financial reasons

Online teachers don’t clock in and zone out. They show up—every single session—with energy, intention, and empathy.

🧑‍🏫 A Teacher’s Calling in a Digital World

You don’t enter this profession to get rich. You enter because you believe in connection, in learning, in giving people a voice.

And it’s not a one-way street. Great online teachers are always:

  • Learning new tech (AI tools, LMS platforms, booking systems)

  • Training and upskilling (TEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, Business English credentials)

  • Networking and marketing themselves on OTMs (Online Teaching Marketplaces) and OTBs (their own business)

  • Burning out and still showing up for their students anyway

If you're doing this work, it’s not because you couldn’t do something else. It’s because you chose this.

You chose to build bridges across screens.
You chose to listen to accents, not mock them.
You chose to light sparks of understanding, one awkward sentence at a time.

👀 To Non-Teachers: Rethink What You See

So the next time you hear someone say, “Oh, she teaches online,”
don’t hear: lesser career.
Hear: global educator.
Hear: digital pioneer.
Hear: coach, guide, mentor, tech master, communicator.

This job doesn’t come with designer suits, IPOs, or corner offices. It comes with freedom, yes—but also fatigue. It comes with joy—but also emotional labor. It comes with independence—but also invisibility.

And above all, it comes with purpose.

💡 To Teachers: See Yourself for Who You Are

You are not “just” anything.

You’re not second to a lawyer, an engineer, or a doctor. You help build futures, repair self-confidence, and make the world smaller in the best way.

So hold your head high the next time someone underestimates you.

They have no idea what you’re doing—or how much skill, spirit, and sacrifice it takes.

But you do.

And that’s enough.
