🏙️ Campus Life
With students from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and further afield, the campus buzzed with ambition and diversity. Lessons extended beyond grammar and argument essays—they were about empowerment and confidence in a digital-first academic world.
While I was lecturing full-time at Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI) and CTI Education Group between 2013 and 2014, weekends and holidays offered a perfect escape into nature and nearby cultural gems. Based in Pretoria, we were spoiled for choice when it came to tranquil getaways and scenic day trips.
One of our favorite spots for a relaxed afternoon was the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens. Just a short drive from where we lived, it became our go-to place for peaceful coffee dates surrounded by indigenous flora, walking trails, and the soothing sound of birdsong. The well-maintained gardens served as a green oasis right in the heart of the city.
For more immersive nature experiences, we often explored Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve, a lesser-known gem tucked into the eastern suburbs. With free entry, roaming impala and zebra, and walking trails under the canopy of wild olive trees, it became a peaceful sanctuary for weekend walks. Just a bit further out, Rietvlei Nature Reserve offered a slightly wilder landscape—home to rhino, buffalo, and cheetah. A morning drive through the reserve often felt like a mini safari without ever leaving Gauteng.
Another frequent stop was the Farm Inn Country Hotel and Wildlife Sanctuary, situated on the outskirts of Pretoria. This unique blend of lodge, wildlife center, and family-friendly resort allowed us to dine while watching lions sunbathe or listen to jackals in the distance. It was a great place to host friends or just enjoy an outdoor meal with a touch of wild adventure.
We also ventured out to smaller towns on occasion. One memorable trip took us to Belfast, a highland farming town in Mpumalanga. Known for its fresh air, rolling grasslands, and trout fishing spots, Belfast had a calm, welcoming atmosphere. The local community was warm and grounded—farmers, artisans, and small business owners all contributing to the town’s quiet charm.
These outings provided not just relaxation, but inspiration—a necessary balance to the rigors of full-time teaching and academic responsibilities. They also reminded me of how accessible natural beauty is in South Africa, even for busy professionals in urban settings.
This wasn’t just a job—it was a return to roots with a futuristic twist. I saw what South Africa’s private education system could offer when blended with global content, real accountability, and smart teaching.
