For many years, success was closely connected to city life. Large cities offered better job opportunities, higher salaries, and a fast-paced lifestyle.
However, in recent years, a new trend has started to grow. More and more professionals are leaving busy urban environments and choosing to live in the countryside.
This shift has become so popular that it inspired TV shows like Escape to the Country, where people search for a quieter, more peaceful life away from the city.
But why are people making this change?
And is the countryside really a better alternative?

Modern professionals are rethinking what success and quality of life really mean. While cities still offer opportunities, they also come with challenges such as high living costs, long commutes, noise, and stress.
For many people, the daily routine of city life has become exhausting. Crowded public transport, busy schedules, and limited personal space can affect both physical and mental well-being.
In contrast, the countryside offers something different. It provides more space, quieter surroundings, a closer connection to nature, and a slower pace of life.
As a result, many professionals are choosing to “escape the city” and build a new lifestyle in rural areas.
One of the biggest reasons for this trend is the rise of remote work.
In the past, people needed to live near their workplace.
Today, technology allows many professionals to work from home or from anywhere with a stable internet connection.
This means that living in the countryside is no longer a barrier to career success for certain types of jobs. Instead of choosing between work and lifestyle, people can now combine both.
👉 This has changed the way people think about where they live.
For those who make the move, the benefits can be significant.
Living in the countryside often means having more physical space, which can improve comfort and reduce stress. Many people enjoy having a garden, fresh air, and access to nature.
The slower pace of life can also support better mental well-being. Without the constant pressure of city life, people often feel more relaxed and focused.
In addition, property in rural areas is usually more affordable. This allows people to buy larger homes or plan long-term living more easily.
Despite the advantages, countryside living is not perfect, and the trend is sometimes misunderstood.
Although more professionals are leaving cities, this is not happening on a large scale. Cities still remain the centre of economic activity, offering jobs, services, education, and social opportunities that are difficult to replace.
Remote work has made relocation possible for some people, but not for everyone. Many jobs still require a physical presence, especially in industries like healthcare, retail, and manufacturing. This means that the ability to move often depends on the type of work a person does.
In addition, the move to the countryside is not always permanent. Some people return to the city after experiencing challenges such as isolation, limited services, or slower internet connections. Others choose a hybrid lifestyle, dividing their time between rural and urban environments.
It is also important to understand that this trend became much stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were forced to reconsider their living situations. Since then, the movement has become more balanced.
👉 In reality, this is not a complete shift away from cities —
but a change in how people think about where and how they live.
This movement is not limited to one country. It is happening in many parts of the world.
In the United Kingdom, shows like Escape to the Country reflect the desire for a simpler and quieter lifestyle.
In the United States, many professionals have moved from large cities to smaller towns or rural areas, particularly after the pandemic.
In countries such as France and Spain, rural living has long been part of the culture, but it is now attracting younger professionals as well.
👉 This shows that the trend is both cultural and economic.
The movement away from large cities is supported by changing economic and lifestyle patterns around the world.
During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies expanded remote and hybrid work policies, allowing professionals greater flexibility in where they live.
Property prices and rental costs in many major cities have continued to rise faster than salaries, increasing pressure on middle-income professionals.
Studies in environmental psychology suggest that regular exposure to green spaces and nature may help reduce stress levels and improve mental well-being.
In several countries, smaller towns and rural areas experienced population growth as professionals searched for more space, quieter environments, and lower living costs.
Longer daily commutes are often linked to higher stress and lower work-life satisfaction, which has encouraged some workers to reconsider urban lifestyles.
High-speed internet access has become one of the most important factors influencing modern countryside living, especially for remote workers and freelancers.
Some professionals now choose a “hybrid lifestyle,” living in rural areas while travelling to cities only when necessary for meetings or business activities.
👉 These trends suggest that modern professionals are increasingly prioritising flexibility, balance, and quality of life alongside career success.
Studies suggest that people who live closer to nature often report higher levels of happiness and lower levels of stress.
At the same time, the cost of urban living continues to rise, making city life less sustainable for many people in the long term.
These two factors together help explain why more people are exploring alternatives to city living.
The decision to leave the city is not simply about location — it is about priorities.
People are increasingly asking themselves what kind of life they want to build. For some, the answer is still the energy and opportunity of the city. For others, it is the peace and space of the countryside.
There is no single correct answer. The best choice depends on personal goals, career needs, and lifestyle preferences.
The idea of success is changing.
For many professionals, success is no longer only about career growth — it is also about quality of life.
👉 more time
👉 more space
👉 more balance
Whether in the city or the countryside, the real goal is not just to live — but to live well.
